Why do we need to limit God?

The purpose of this article is to explore humanities collective belief in God. More importantly, it is to explore why and how these beliefs have been manipulated. Just to be clear, I am not going to accuse Religion, Politics, or Money for this manipulation. I cannot, even if I wanted to…the only responsible party is myself (you).

I have manipulated my own beliefs based on my idea of who and what I am. Sounds a little strange, doesn’t it? The truth is that we all do it, we have no choice. For every “thing” that we believe we are, there has to be an equal opposite “thing” we believe we’re not. This concept is called Duality, I’ve explained it in other writings. (see Duality and Creation). Now, how do we decide what we think we are and what we think we’re not? What is the foundation of these decisions?

In the perception of Duality we view things in one of two perspectives. Good or Bad is an example of this. So, in choosing our own “self-perception”, we are choosing the perception of Good or Bad (Painful or Pleasant). We do this because, like all creatures, we have a deep down need to be happy. Unfortunately, the most commonly travelled road to this idea of “happiness” is the practice of labelling and definition. There is security in these practices…or at least the illusion of it.

The one and only constant in the universe is “change”. It’s always happening, whether we like it or not. In fact, these are our choices…get used to it or be afraid of it. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of reasons to be afraid out there. Storms, Wars, Famine, Disease, Pain, Starvation, Poverty…all perceived to be negative things. The key here is “perceived”, these things are only negative because of our opinion of them.

Before you decide I’m cold and heartless, hear me out. When our perception of the world exists in Duality, we have no choice but to view things as Good or Bad. Remember, Creation and Duality are the same thing…without duality there would be no reality. But, before there was a reality, there was only one thing….that’s right, God!

In the beginning of this essay I mentioned that my ideas and perceptions of God are completely and utterly manipulated by my idea of myself. This is true for one reason and one reason alone…I have an idea of myself. Ideas, like all things, are creations of duality…you have good ideas or bad ideas. But, we’re not talking about ideas here…we’re talking about God. “God” does not exist in Duality (it can’t, it’s one thing), therefore any “idea” of God is biased an based on my own opinion.

This is the problem with having ideas, they are always based upon some deep down motive that we refuse to be aware of. For example, the believe that God is “Love” and “Good” and nothing else is entirely based upon my own need to feel better about myself. You might be wondering how, but think about it. The only reason I want to believe that the entity I claim devotion to is nothing but “Good” is because I myself need the reassurance that I, too, am Good. I am, once again, trying to convince myself I am “something” and not “something else”. Thus, suddenly God is no longer one thing…now there’s an equal opposite to believe in…The Devil.

The point is that God and The Devil are ideas…they are entirely based upon Duality. If God is simple Unity (being all things), then It is the Devil too. Do I want to admit that? Of course not, I fear the things the “Devil” represents to me.

It seems, that when it comes down to it, I want to have an idea of God…it protects me from facing my fears. But is there truly anything to fear?

The perception of “Unity” is not a new one, but definitely “the path less travelled”. This is true because of our devotion to Duality. We do not like the idea of ultimate responsibility. We don’t want to face our fears. To do this means to abandon our idea of who we are…if we abandon the idea we are left without a definition…we are left to the will of change. We must surrender. This, and nothing else, is true faith.
