There are three components to working your abs to get that sculpted look—nutrition, aerobic exercise and abdominal training. Truth is, you won’t have a washboard stomach with a 6-inch layer of fat over it, no matter how many crunches you do. In order to get a good six-pack, you have to remove the fat that covers your abdominal muscles, and that takes a nutritionally balanced weight-loss diet and aerobic exercise.

You can, however, strengthen your abs even before you lose the fat; the abdominals are core muscles and strong abs stabilize your spine, give you good posture and balance and help you move smoothly and gracefully.

Anatomy

There are three layers of abdominal muscles, and they run in three different directions. The outermost layer contains the outer oblique muscles, which run diagonally along the sides of your abdomen, connecting the posterior ribs, spine and pelvis. The next layer contains the internal obliques, which run just under the external ones, and the rectus abdominus. The rectus is a broad, flat muscle that runs vertically down the front of your abdomen from the ribs to your pelvis. It is crossed by several horizontal tendons, which is what gives you that six-pack look. The bottom layer contains the transverse abdominus, which runs horizontally across your abdomen from side to side.

It’s helpful to know what the function of each of the muscles is:
• The rectus flexes your spine.
• The transverse abdominus is primarily used for abdominal breathing.
• The external obliques rotate your body toward the opposite side (contracting the left external obliques causes you to rotate toward the right.)
• The internal obliques rotate your body toward the same side.

Protect Your Spine

When you’re doing ab training, remember that these muscles attach to your spine. It’s important to make sure you are doing exercises correctly; consult with a trainer if you’re not sure how to perform them.

Full sit ups are not recommended anymore by anyone because they 1)aren’t necessary for exercising your abs and 2)can injure your spine. We do crunches instead.

Whenever you are doing ab training, place your hands behind your neck and press your back toward the floor. Keep your knees bent. This protects the natural curves of your spine.

IMPORTANT: If you have osteoporosis or a previous back injury, check with your doctor before attempting any ab training exercises.

Crunches

All ab training exercises are a variation on the basic crunch. You can raise your hips or your shoulders, but the object is to contract the abdominal muscles. Here are a few crunch pointers:
• Save crunches for the end of your workout. Remember, the abdominal muscles are involved in respiration, and you don’t want to fatigue them early in the workout.
• Pull your stomach in—press your belly button into your back—to contract the transverse muscle. Remember not to hold your breath while you’re doing this.
• Keep your abdominals tightened throughout a series of reps. Make your movements slow and controlled, and pause briefly at the top of each rep.
• Don’t raise your hips or shoulders more than 4-6 inches off the floor—that’s all you need for full contraction of the muscles.
• Do lateral crunches to work the obliques—pointing your left shoulder at your right knee.

Crunches are the key to strong abs—regular crunches, oblique crunches, hip raises, crunches with added weight. Keep crunching and soon you’ll have great abs.

Aerobic—has to do with oxygen use. Aerobic exercises are those in which your muscles use oxygen to burn fuel for energy. Because your heart and lungs provide oxygen to the muscles, aerobic exercise is also called cardiorespiratory conditioning. Anaerobic—without oxygen. Anerobic exercises require your body to function beyond its aerobic capacity and use alternate, non-oxygen pathways to burn fuel. Anaerobic exercise can only be performed for short periods of time, and is usually alternated with rest periods or aerobic activity. Anaerobic activities build muscle strength and increase glycogen reserves. Body Composition—the amounts of various types of tissue in the body, including muscle, fat, bone and water. Body Mass Index (BMI)—a ratio that indicates the percentage of an individual’s body weight that is fat. Usual measures of BMI may not be accurate in exceptionally fit individuals. Calorie—a unit of measurement of energy. Generally speaking, we use the term to refer to the energy in food or to energy used during activity. Carbohydrate—one of the three macronutrients. Carbohydrates supply energy. Cool down—a period of slower-paced exercise following an aerobic workout, usually lasting 5-15 minutes. It allows the body to gradually return to its pre-exercise state. Dehydration—loss of body water. Loss of body water during exercise is usually due to sweating and increased respiration, and inadequate fluid replacement. Duration—the time length of an exercise session; how long it lasts. Endurance—your ability to exercise for a period of time without undue fatigue. Sometimes broken out into muscle endurance and cardiorespiratory endurance. Fat—one of the three macronutrients. There are several kinds of fats; some are healthy and some are not. Fitness—the ability to perform activities without excessive fatigue. The components of fitness are cardiovascular fitness (ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the muscles), muscle strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. Flexibility—the ability of joints and their corresponding muscles to bend and stretch. Glycogen—a carbohydrate that serves as short-term energy storage. Glycogen is primarily found in muscles and the liver. Hydration—the amount of water in your body. Adults are 40-60% water. Intensity—how hard you are working during an activity Interval—training which alternates periods of intense activity with periods of less intense activity. Low impact—usually used to describe aerobic activities that do not stress joints and muscles. Maximum heart rate—the fastest your heart can beat. Maximum heart rate is estimated by subtracting your age from 220. Micronutrients—vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and other nutrients that are needed only in very small amounts. Protein—one of the three macronutrients. Protein is necessary for growth and repair of tissue. In cases of starvation, protein can be used by the body as an alternate energy source. Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)—a subjective measure of exercise intensity. The RPE is how hard it feels like you are working. Strength training—(also called resistance training or weight training)—activities that build muscle strength and endurance. Talk test—a subjective measure of exercise intensity. With moderately intense exertion, you can speak, but not sing without breathlessness. Target heart rate—an objective measure of exercise intensity. With moderately intense exertion, your heart rate should be between 50% and 70% of your maximum heart rate. Warm up—a period of 5-15 minutes prior to aerobic exercise where you gradually increase the rate of exercise to allow muscles to warm up.

The past decade or so has seen an explosion of research about nutrition, exercise and the human body. Some of this research has confirmed what we already knew—things like, a healthy diet and regular exercise make you live long and prosper. Some research, however, has proven that some “common wisdom” about exercise is just plain wrong. Here are ten myths that you don’t want to buy into.

1. Lifting weights makes you bulk up. Actually, this is true—if you are male. Women don’t have the biochemistry necessary to develop big, bulky muscles. They will get stronger, but not bulkier.

2. It’s inevitable to gain weight as you age. False. People gain weight as they age because they become more sedentary and their metabolic rate drops. Weight gain is not inevitable.

3. Fat people are not fit, so you have to lose weight before you can get in shape. False again. Fitness has to do with flexibility, muscle strength and endurance and cardiovascular endurance, not with how fat you are. Fat people may not look fit, but some are in pretty good shape. Getting in shape will also help you lose weight faster because it makes your body burn calories faster.

4. No pain, no gain. Absolutely not. You should not hurt before, during or after exercise. Some mild, transient muscle soreness may occur the first few times you work out, but it should not persist.

5. If you don’t exercise regularly, there’s no point in exercising at all. Nope, not true. Of course, it’s ideal to exercise regularly, but anything at all is better than nothing at all.

6. Old people can’t exercise. Exercise has definite benefits for older people. If you have health problems or haven’t exercised in a while, though, you should check with your doctor and discuss what kind of exercise will be most beneficial for you. There may be some kinds of exercise you should avoid.

7. You can get a flat tummy (or butt or firm thighs, etc) by working those muscles. This one is true—sort of. If you are lean and trim, you can improve the appearance of your tummy or tush with resistance training. If, however, you have a thick layer of fat over your abs and gluts, your tummy won’t get flat. It will, however, get strong, and that will help your posture and prevent back injuries.

8. Always stretch before exercising. Recent research indicates that stretching before a workout doesn’t do any good, and may even limit your performance slightly.

9. Everybody benefits from exercise. True, in some ways. Everybody does get some benefit from exercise. But not everybody gets the same benefit. People have a range of different responses to exercise; Mr. Universe may be able to build big, sculpted muscles while Mr. Milquetoast may never be able to lift more than 50 pounds and just gets “wiry.”

10. You can’t exercise if….. Just about everybody can do some kind of exercise. They do passive exercises on people who are unconscious and on breathing machines in the hospital, for pete’s sake. Many people have exercise limitations, but everybody benefits from moving about a little bit.

We’re not necessarily talking about Elvis’ trademark sideburns or Catherine Hepburn’s trademark voice, but that’s not too far from the path.

They’re everywhere you look, and yet do you really know what they are? Trademarks are a strange animal and it’s necessary that you get to know them if you have business endeavors of any kind. Whether you’re making your own trademark or using other trademarks, there’s a whole lot to learn.

The definition of trademark is a pretty simple one. It’s only later that the topic gets complicated. Basically, a trademark is just a sign of some kind that distinguishes a company from all the rest. Trademarks sit under the umbrella of “intellectual property.” A trademark can come in many different forms. Maybe it’s am image or a a turn of phrase. Paris Hilton was recently poked fun at for trademarking the phrase “that’s hot.” Indeed, there’s a lot of controversy over what can and should be trademarked.

Are you thinking about buying some intellectual property? If you do, you will be able to take people to court if they use your trademark without permission. It’s important that your company has a signature and unless it’s protected, it’s useless and can be used by just about anyone. A trademark might seem a simple concept enough, but if you overlook the issue, it could cost you a lot down the road.

When talking about trademarks, you’re bound to get into some murky water. For instance, some marks, logos, phrases, images, etc, become trademarks over time, if by chance they simply grow to become synonymous with a particular product or service. When we think of trademarks in this way, it’s pretty apparent that a trademark is not a narrow concept at all. Anything that conspicuously distinguishes something from something else, in a sense, can technically be a trademark.

What about those little circles with the “TM” and “R” in them? What do they mean? The “TM” refers to trademark and the “R” refers to a registered trademark. While they serve as gentle reminders that the trademark is protected by law, they aren’t necessary. There are both unregistered and registered trademarks out there, the latter obviously carrying more weight in a court of law. Most of the trademarks you see on TV and in magazines are registered.

Just as with physical property, intellectual property – when handled in court – is dealt with based on its jurisdiction.

There are five basic kinds of trademarks: distinctive, arbitrary, suggestive, descriptive, and generic. On the other hand, there are some symbols that can never be used in trademarks, like national flags. It’s also important to note that national and international trademark law vary, so especially if you are conducing business overseas, you should be aware of that.

A trademark can open your company up to all kinds of business and separate it from the pack, but if it’s not formed carefully, it may misrepresent and misdirect your company. So choose your trademark intelligently and make sure you understand the law backing it up so that you can put it to good work.

If you have a knack for singing, dancing acting or just about anything that people may love, why don’t you share them online? The internet is a another world of possibility that anyone can now do anything and be heard if the thing that they do best is interesting to other people. The internet could be anyone’s stage and you can easily show your talent and be known in the internet. Others are so good; they have used the internet to become famous.

They don’t just create a website tell their friends to look at their video. Even though it will spread, it’s going to be really slow as it will just pass through the word of mouth. How do you do it? Social networking websites and the best in the US is Myspace.com. Just create an account and sign yourself up as an artist and you’re on your way to popularity.

The only excuse of not knowing the popularity Myspace.com in this country is if you’re living in a bomb shelter for more than 15 years. This social networking website has become the hangout of some people that is has become short of an addiction to them. Don’t just count thousands but millions.

Social networking website connects you to other people even though you don’t know them personally. You can share how you feel and what you would like them to see or hear. Since it can be shared to one person to another, there’s a chance that you will be recognized and in no time you’ll have friends from all over the country.

As we have said this is one of those sites that you can use as a platform to be quite famous for some time. There’s a page there dedicated for artists where you can sign up and be part of the great pool of artists that you have there. Once you’ve sign up, people will naturally browse through your songs and before you know it, people will acknowledge your work and you become famous.

On the paper that’s really easy as one, two, three. But if you’re half committed to being famous either by music or film, you won’t get anywhere. There are hundreds of wanna bees in the internet that doesn’t even get close to be recognized by a hundred of people online. What they just do is create some silly music and from there try to impress people by being quite crazy in their songs. If you’re really an artist, you might get recognition but if not, people will just scorn you since you’re just wasting their bandwidth.

Here’s a tip: if you want to break out in myspace.com you have to consider who goes there often and who are most likely to be looking for things online. If you’re creating music for the people of 40-60, you’re in bad shape since most of the people that are using online are way below that age. The famous people that can be launched to fame are those that create music for age group 16-30. If you can do something to entertain them you’re on your way.

One of the best things that you can do in any of the social websites, especially in myspace.com is to create the way you really want it to look. You can change the background color, the things that will appear and the information that you will provide. It’s a perfect place to be yourself through the things that you like and love. Now you don’t only have something that can connect to the online community, but you have something very personal that people that don’t even know you can connect to you. A classic example is that you can easily personalize your wallpaper. You can change the color, the shade or even place a picture of yourself or your favorite character in a movie or just about anything. There are some that even place music once their webpage goes up.

How do you do this? Website coding. Of course, since you have a webpage, the only thing that will enable you to manage your webpage is through proper coding. If you’re not familiar with it, try to look for some information on how a website is created. You will encounter a bunch of information about HTML. Just think of an HTML as a formula in creating a website. Since your myspace.com page is a website, it will also require some knowledge about HTML and know how it works.

But don’t be afraid or feel intimidated by this. Even an eight year old girl can change their myspace.com webpage into something really fancy. If you know where to place the right button and enter the right information, you’re on your way. A kid can place powerpuff girls in her webpage and make it look really, really good so why can’t you. You don’t even have to research that much to get the best background or personalization in your website.

What can you do to make your website really look good? You just have to go to sites like getonmyspace.com or layoutgirl.com to get some ready made myspace layouts, and you’ll be presented with hundreds and hundreds of layouts that you can place in your webpage. You don’t even have to create a complicated HTML code for months. You just copy and paste the information and then it will be placed in your webpage before you know it.

Here’s a word of caution though. There are so many things that are placed in the codes that sometimes, they are embedded with a formula that can access some of your personal information. There are codes that are quite complicated that it can become a spyware for your computer. Though it rarely happens it could happen to anyone. Of course the virus that will be placed in your computer which you should watch out as well. To prevent this, all you need to is to take a look at the code. I know that you’re now familiar with it but all the code should have is a source, a number and some letters, there are some sentences that you will understand and it will be helpful.
