But this particular rat, named Remy, is not only the lovable animated star of the new Disney-Pixar movie “Ratatouille,” he seems quite at home whether scurrying behind a 12-burner range or seasoning a pot of potage.

More than anything, Remy wants to be in the kitchen. Not going through the garbage, mind you, rather, this rat wants to be a gourmet chef, and his goal — to get his gustatory groove on at Gusteau’s, a five-star Parisian restaurant — is deliciously entertaining.

As I watched Remy foster a friendship with Linguini, the garbage boy, and begin his culinary adventure, I was struck by the incredible dedication to detail of everything from the gleam of the copper pots in the kitchen and the crackling crust in a baguette to the wine that was so perfectly poured you could almost smell the fruit in the Bordeaux.

Disney spent time getting the cooking details right. The studio sent its animators to cooking classes, and it enlisted celebrated chef Thomas Keller of the French Laundry in Yountville and Per Se in New York for advice.

When Remy needs to create the movie’s namesake meal — ratatouille (a popular French vegetable dish made with eggplant, peppers, onions, tomatoes and summer squash) — to please an important restaurant critic, Anton Ego, Keller (who also provides the voice of a restaurant patron in the movie) came up with the idea of basing the dish on “confit byaldi,” a stacked melange of paper-thin vegetables.

Remy uses produce that looks so fresh, your eyes will practically water when the onion is chopped.

While ratatouille is certainly not as challenging to make as the movie, there are about as many recipes for it as there are hairs on Remy’s colorful head.

You can serve it warm or at room temperature as a main dish, or toss it with pasta. Mound it on slices of crusty bread for an open-faced sandwich, serve it as a salad or as an appetizer with crackers or chips for dipping.

The HairMax LaserComb may be an option for men who don’t want to pay for hair restoration surgery but who also don’t have high expectations. It delivers a specific wavelength of light that stimulates the hair follicle, says its manufacturer, Lexington International.

In studies by the manufacturer, the device increased the number of thick hairs in 93 percent of 120 users. The average increase in hair density was 19 hairs per square centimeter — roughly a 20 percent improvement in someone with thinning hair.

The device costs $545 and must be used 10 to 15 minutes a day, three times a week to maintain the effect.

In contrast, laser hood treatments, which are available in clinics and cover the entire scalp, can cost hundreds of dollars per treatment and need to be repeated at least twice a week.

Hair transplants provide a more permanent solution but typically cost thousands of dollars.

Topical medications, such as Rogaine, run about $10 per bottle for the generic but produce only modest results for some users.

The laser hair comb is not backed by randomized, controlled studies done by independent researchers, says Dr. Paul Cotterill, president of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

The device may be best suited for men who are serious about hair regrowth, such as those who undergo hair transplantation and want to augment the result at home, he says.

“This new laser comb won’t hurt, and it may help at maintaining hair,” Cotterill says. “But I want to see third-party studies — studies that have not been done by the people who produced it.”

Other laser hair regrowth devices are on the market but haven’t received FDA clearance to make claims of effectiveness. Sunetics, which sells the Laser Hair Brush, is applying for FDA clearance, says John Carullo, the company’s marketing director.

In a side-dress application, the nitrogen fertilizer is applied along the sides of the plants, about six inches away from the stems, either along the row or around individual plants, such as tomatoes.

A Purdue publication on vegetable gardening, HO-32-W, suggests using ammonium nitrate, which has an analysis of 33-0-0, as the fertilizer material. However, it’s not readily available, and other forms of fertilizer can be used on an equivalent basis.

One is urea, which has an analysis of 46-0-0. It can become volatile, escape into the air and burn the leaves and should be incorporated immediately by lightly tilling it into the soil or watering it in with irrigation.

The general application rate for ammonium nitrogen is about one pound, or about one pint, per 100 feet of row. For three feet of row, that’s one tablespoon (one teaspoon per foot). When urea is used, apply slightly less, or about 1 1/2 cups per 100 feet of row, 2 1/4 teaspoons per three feet of row or 3/4 teaspoon per foot of row. For example, if you side-dress tomato plants, spaced four feet apart, you should use one level tablespoon (three teaspoons) of urea around each plant.

The time for side-dressing depends on the crop. Side-dress tomatoes about two weeks after the first fruit sets, two weeks after picking the first tomato and again one month later. The cole crops (cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli) should be side-dressed three weeks after setting out plants, onions about one to two weeks after bulb formation and peppers after the first fruit sets.

Side-dress cucumbers one week after blossoming begins and three weeks later; peas and beans, after heavy bloom and set of pods; and sweet corn when plants are 8-10 inches tall and one week after tassels appear. It’s important not to apply more than the recommended amount of nitrogen or damage to plant roots can occur.

*Deadhead or remove spent blossoms from early-blooming perennials to prevent seed formation and encourage re-bloom later this season or next year.

*Remove vegetable crops such as lettuce, which have bolted (formed seed stalks), and replant the areas with bush green beans.

*Thin fruit from apple trees after the June drop of excess fruit. Space remaining fruit about 6 inches apart (one per cluster on the average), to obtain larger and higher quality fruit.

*Plant seeds of cole crops (cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower) to obtain transplants to set out in late July for a fall harvest.

This blueprint for America’s budget is an important milestone because Congress was unable to pass a budget in three of the last five years. This budget:

– Improves children’s health care by expanding funds available to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

– Invests in education by increasing funds for No Child Left Behind and Pell grants.

– Creates a deficit-neutral $20 billion reserve fund to increase funding for energy, disaster assistance and commodity support in the next Farm Bill.

The Bush administration said Saturday that senior advisers would recommend the president veto Senate legislation that would substantially increase funds for children’s health insurance.

The legislation calls for a 61-cent increase in the federal excise tax on a pack of cigarettes. The revenue would be used to subsidize health insurance for children and some adults with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford insurance on their own. Members of the Senate Finance Committee brokered a bipartisan agreement Friday that would add $35 billion to the program over the next five years. The Bush administration had instead recommend $5 billion.

The Senate legislation expands the State Children’s Health Insurance Program beyond the original intent of the program, said White House Spokesman Tony Fratto.

‘It’s clear that it will have the effect of encouraging many to drop private coverage _ purchased either through their employer or with their own resources _ to go on the government-subsidized program,’ Fratto said. ‘Tax increases are neither necessary nor advisable to appropriately fund SCHIP.’

Congress is considering renewing the program before it expires Sept. 30. When Congress approved the program in 1997, it provided $40 billion over 10 years. States use the money, along with their own dollars, to subsidize the cost of health insurance. The federal government covers about 70 percent of the cost.

‘Congress needs to deliver a bill the president can sign or they need to send him an extension so that people don’t worry about losing their current coverage,’ Fratto said. ‘It’s important that Congress understands the serious consequences of delaying this or sending the president legislation that he clearly cannot sign.’

Fratto also called on the Senate Finance Committee to consider the president’s recommendation to tax employees on the health insurance premiums paid by their employers. The president would offset the increased taxes by giving taxpayers a deduction or credit. The result would be a tax cut for most families, but not for those with the highest-priced insurance plans.

To coin an analogy, think of Google as the biggest department store in the world (I know, that’s either Wal-Mart or Amazon, but bear with me). For most of your needs, you’ll probably be able to find the right item at that department store. But say your portly Aunt Edna just fell and did something nasty to her knee, for which she now needs a custom-built brace. You wouldn’t go to the department store for that; you’d go to a hospital, which would be able to refer to you to the right place to have that made.

By the same token, if you’re looking for the most up-to-date medical information on a particular condition, you might go to Google if it’s a well-known and much-discussed condition such as breast cancer, but not if it’s something that’s more rare and unusual. For that, you’d be wise to consider some of the vertical search engines that explicitly cover the health and medical field.

Yet another site to check is About.com. Of course, it’s an alternative search engine itself these days. It has a guide, Wendy Boswell, for the Web Search topic. One of the areas she covers is search engines. The link I gave will take you to articles that review and discuss the alternatives. Successfully growing herbs depends on properly managing the following:

1) Location
2) Soil
3) Site preparation
4) Drainage
5) Pest Containment

The first step to successful herb gardening is deciding on the site. Size depends on the variety of herbs you wish to cultivate. A good size for a kitchen garden site should be about 4 feet by 20 feet. Diagram the area and label each segment for the herb you wish to grow. Be sure to separate the annual and perennial herbs.

When selecting a site, drainage is the most important feature. Herbs will not grow in wet soil. The soil need not be especially fertile. Very fertile soil will grow big plants without much flavor. The soil should be essentially neutral, neither heavy on the acid nor alkaline. If, however, the soil does not drain well, remove 15 to 18 inches of soil and put in a 3 inch layer of gravel and replace the soil. The soil will now drain more efficiently. A ph factor of around 6.5 produces excellent herbs.

Once the soil has been selected and proper drainage is ensured; it is time to prepare the soil. Remove 12 to 18 inches of the top soil. Make sure the sub soil is not hard or compacted. If it is, work in sphagnum peat or organic material to loosen it up. Mix the top soil with sphagnum peat and sand or composting material to make certain it is workable and will maintain moisture. Replace the top soil with a few inches more than was taken off to allow for the garden to settle once it is planted.

Be on the lookout for garden insects and or diseases. Aphids, spider mites, grass hoppers, caterpillars, and rust can come your way. Be sure to treat for these pests and diseases at the first sign of infection. Don’t allow any of them to get the upper hand and ruin you herb garden.

Herb gardening is easy as long as you follow a few directions and take the steps necessary to ensure success. Be sure to plan you garden first, then select the for location, size, and soil features. Once these tasks have been successfully accomplished, prepare the site by assuring proper drainage. Make certain the subsoil and top soil are prepared with adequate organic materials and control the pests and plant diseases.

Herb gardening is fun and provides a sense of accomplishment. Also, herb gardening provides you with fresh herbs for food preparation in your kitchen. No more of those dried herbs.

1. Put pots of flowers along one side of steps. This works well if you keep each container pretty much the same size and the flowers/plants the same or similar.

2. Hanging baskets on porch. One or more containers of colorful cascading flowers - such as ivy geraniums, petunias, begonias - in one color or combinations of colors, make a delightful “welcome home”.

3. Set planters on both sides of front door. Tall, narrow plantings work best. Also,Topiary, sculpted green shrubs, or even a vine on an obelisk.

4. Place a grouping of containers on a bench. If you have a bench, table or shelf just sitting there, group a few containers of varying sizes. Plants can be assorted colors and types.

7. A grouping in the corner of a deck. Decks are so boring and lifeless, they need a decorative element. Grouping several containers of varying sizes, shapes and types with loads of colorful flowers makes a more inviting place.

8. Encircling a tree trunk. As long as there is enough light, making a “flower box” around a tree trunk and filling it with flowers, adds color and interest to an otherwise empty space.

9. Hanging on a wall. Using brackets, you can attach containers to a wall and fill with flowers in a color that contrasts to the wall color for a spectacular attention grabber.

10. In an old wagon or wheelbarrow. If you are a collector of “antiques” or just happen to have these or similar items - fill with an assortment of annual plants.
