Here are some easy step by step instructions to get the most out of your scanner for you.

1. Carefully clean the scanner glass with a piece of cloth or glass cleaner and allow it to dry.
2. Make sure the scanner is on.
3. Place the item on the scanner glass with the image facing down. Ensure that the actual print area is parallel to the edges of the scanner.
4. After you start the scanner software, run a preview. If your scanner software does not run the preview automatically, do so yourself.
5. If your picture or graphic appears skewed or crooked in the preview, line it up better and repeat the preview.
6. On the preview, use your mouse to outline the desired scan area.
7. If you are going to use Photoshop (or any other image editing program), scan all color images as ‘millions of colors’. Otherwise, use grey scale for black and white.
8. Adjust the scanner resolution. Set it to 300 dpi to scan for printing and 72 dpi for scanning for use on the web.
9. Try the auto-exposure button if applicable in your scanner software to adjust brightness and contrast, if needed.
10. Click Scan or Final to scan the image.
12. Save image in tif, psd or bmp if you are scanning to print. Save it in jpg or gif if you are scanning for the web.

With all scanner software, the scanning features and scanning process are generally similar. However, here are a few scanner software programs that we recommend.

If you want to scan from your transparencies and produce good quality 24bit images somewhat automatically, then Silverfast AI Scanner Software could be a good choice for you. If you want to scan negatives, then you may find Vuescan Scanning Software pretty useful. Any program needs to be compatible with your scanner.

Other Recommended Scanner Software:

HP PrecisionScan
Microtek ScanWizard 5
Microtek ScanWizard Pro 6
Minolta Scan Dual II
Umax VistaScan
Umax MagicScan

Few final tips to add on scanning and printing your scanned images are:

• Choose the best possible photo. Although you can make adjustments on your image with the image editing programs, the better your original scanning photo, the better your final scan will be. For better results, choose pictures with good contrast and that also have good lighting.

• Always scan your image in the position or direction in which the image will be used. If you rotate the image in your image editing program, some detail will be lost.

• Scan only the part of the image that you need. If you don’t need the whole image but only a small portion of it, then just scan that portion. Your scanner software has the tools to do this.

• To make adjustments to color and sharpness on your scanned image, use your image editor, not the scanning software of your scanner.

• When saving a jpg, a quality of 2, 3 or 4 is generally sufficient for scanning for the web.

• When you are editing, don’t forget that the image’s appearance will change from monitor to monitor. Also, the height and width of the image will vary from software to software.

• Read the manual for your scanner software if available and get to know your scanner software. Or, just play with the scanner software until you are sufficiently familiar with it. As you make more and more scans, you will better understand how to get the best results from your scanner.

The photo printers in today’s market offer professional quality digital photos with real-life colors. But there are some photo printing tips and tactics for getting the best results out of your photo printer.

1. High Resolution
Resolution determines the quality of the printed text and images. It’s measured in dpi (dots per inch), the maximum number of dots the printer can print in a square inch. Higher dpi means higher resolution. The higher the resolution, the sharper the photos will be. Get a printer with a minimum of 1200 x 1200 dpi for good quality. For example HP Photosmart 8450 Photo Printer offers Up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi (Photo Paper, 1200 x 1200 dpi input)

2. Right Format
Save your photo in the correct format. For emailing, you can use the JPEG format but for printing save your pictures in the TIFF format. TIFF format results in a rather larger file size, but it produces the best results. The JPEG format is more suitable for e-mailing as it results in smaller, compressed files which are ideal for sending by e-mail.

3. Printer Settings
Set your photo printer’s settings to “highest” print quality when printing photos. But for small prints (3” x 5”), “normal” resolution may be sufficient. Refer to your photo printer’s user’s guide to find out how to change quality settings.

4. Photo Editing Software
Use a good quality photo editing software to alter your digital photographs, to remove dust marks and specks. The printer will pick up all the flaws even if they’re small.

5. Type of Photo Paper
Using photo papers will give you the best results as they are especially designed for this purpose. Letting your photo printer know what type of paper you are using can have a remarkable effect on the completed print. The plain paper setting uses the most ink, whereas glossy film and photo paper settings use the least. The main differences in all photo papers are; opacity, brightness, weight, caliper (thickness) and finish.

6. Paper Settings
Paper settings control the amount of printer ink that’s put down on paper, so using the paper setting that matches your photo paper is crucial for generating good prints. Different paper types need different settings. For instance plain paper setting uses more ink compared to glossy or photo paper setting. Find the accurate setting for your paper by trying different settings.

7. Photo Paper Drying Time
After printing give your photo paper sufficient time to dry before you frame it. Drying time may vary according to temperature, light and humidity. In general it is a recommended to let the digital photograph print dry for roughly 24 hours.

In this article we are going to talk about important terminology and aspects of buying a digital photo printer. When you are shopping you are exposed all these different numbers and features of photo printers, so hopefully this article can help you a little bit in your search.

Digital Photo Printer Prices

Current inkjet photo printer models cost anywhere from $50 to $400. As a general rule, faster inkjet photo printers a re the more expensive option. A typical dedicated photo printer costs between $150 and $400 . Professional photo printers start at about $500. The all-in -ones usually cost between $100 and $800 and portable photo printer prices vary from $200 to $350.

Please keep in mind that most photo printers do not come with a printer cable that connects the printer to the computer so remember to include printer cable cost in your budget; their prices range from $5 to $25.

Digital Photo Printer Specs to Consider

Here are the important points to consider when buying a photo printer: Resolution. Resolution is the maximum number of dots (dots per inch or dpi) that the printer can print in a square inch. In theory, higher resolution will give better results and will print more details which is especially important for printing graphics. The higher the resolution, the sharper and clearer your results will be. However as a marketing ploy, manufacturers inflate the resolution numbers . These numbers are not the only factors to be considered when looking at print quality. The ink cartridges or toner cartridges, the number of colors used, the paper and the method of printing (at which quality you are printing) are also great factors in print quality. Dpi resolution in the printing arena is the equivalent to pixels in a digital photograph. A digital photograph is made up of thousands of pixels. Resolution is one of the most important aspects of photo prin ting. You will want a photo printer with a resolution of at least 1200 dpi. To test the real print quality of the printer, it is best to print out a sample rather than just looking at its resolution.

Speed

Photo printers have similar speeds to standard inkjet printers. However, compared to inkjet printers, they can be slower when printing text as photo printers are specially designed for photo printing. If you plan on making a large number of photo prints, speed will also be a n important factor for you. In that case, get a fast printer, though keep in mind that their prices are higher.

Printing without a PC

If you want to print your pictures directly from your digital camera without using a computer, then you can select a photo printer that has this feature. Such photo printers have memory card slots and most are compatible with the PictBridge technology. So you can use a PictBridge compatible camera and print directly from these printers.

Every scanner has different scanning instructions. However, the scanning process in general is similar. In this article, you will find all the information you need on how to scan images for different purposes. The useful scanning tips will help you get the maximum performance out of your scanner.
When scanning images, the intended use of the image is important. Are you planning on printing it, sending it as an email or using it on the web? Knowing what you want to do with the scanned image will help you choose the right format for your image. The most common file formats for images are tif, gif, jpg, bmp and psd (Photoshop).

Scanning for Print
If you are going to print out your scanned image, save it as a tif or bmp. The quality of gifs and jpgs in printed documents is inferior to tifs and bmps.

Scanning for Web
If you are going to use your scanned image on the web, save it as a gif or jpg file.
If it is a simple graphic image, save it as a gif file. If you will be scanning photos, save them as jpg files.

Multi-Purpose Scanning
If you are going to both print your scanned image and use it on the web, then save it in a high quality format (psd, tif, or bmp). If needed, you can always open this file later and save it as a web image.
File Formats
TIFF (extension: tif): Used for high-resolution image to be printed
GIF (extension: gif): Used for low-resolution web image, line art, or solid color
JPEG (extension: jpg): Used for low-resolution web image or photograph
Photoshop (extension: psd): Used for high-resolution image to be edited in Photoshop
Bitmap (extension: bmp): Used for high-resolution image to be printed
Knowing what you would like to do with the scanned image will help you choose the right file size. If you are going to use your image on the web, a medium to medium-low quality image will be quite sufficient.

A small image will also load faster on the web page. So you may prefer using lower sizes as the viewers of the image may get impatient waiting for a larger image to load.

For printed images, the file size may need to be higher depending on what type of a document you will use it in. The higher the file size the better the image quality. A higher- size file has a higher resolution. Resolution is the number of pixels (or dots) per inch of image (dpi).

Digital photography has advanced a great deal recently and has become the preferred method for most photography lovers. The number of people who print their own pictures with photo printers is increasing day by day.

If you want to start taking and printing your own digital photographs at home or office yet do not know how to choose a photo printer, you’ll definitely want to read on.

Types of Photo Printers

Types of photo printers vary and options on offer are mainly inkjet photo printers, portable photo printers, all-in-one photo printers, dedicated photo printers and professional photo printers.

Almost all the new photo printers in the market today provide great quality photo printing. Whether they are quite affordable or more expensive, most of them provide similar photo quality. Where they differ is usually with regards to their speed and features.

If you will be printing snapshots to share with friends and family, almost any inkjet photo printer will be fine for you. However, if you want to frame and display your photos or perhaps hang them on the wall in your home, you’ll need further consideration in choosing the right photo printer. Canon PIXMA iP5000, HP Photosmart 8450 and Epson Stylus Photo R800 are some examples of current popular inkjet photo printers.

Dedicated photo printers are built around thermal-dye technology. The maximum print size on these printers is often 4 x 6 inches. Within the same category, there are dedicated photo printers with larger output, up to 4 x 8 inches or 5 x 7 inches, and lightweight inkjets with a maximum 4 x 6 output size. The dedicated photo printers offer very good to excellent output; although they may offer a limited choice in paper size. If the only choice the printer offers is 4 x 6 inches and you want credit card -size prints, for example, you’ll either have to print two or three photos on the same sheet or waste some photo paper which may be very costly for you in the long term. Epson PictureMate
and Canon Pixma iP6000D are some examples of current popular dedicated photo
printers.

Some of the all-in-one printe rs also offer extra features for photo printing. With some
of them you can print photos directly from your camera without connecting to a PC.
Others offer a button for a proof sheet showing every photo on the card. You can select
the shots you want to print with a pen by filling in the ovals that appear under each
proof-sheet image and it will automatically print only the photos you select. HP OfficeJet
4215, HP PSC 1315 and Canon PIXMA MP780 are some examples of current popular all-in-one photo printers.

Professional photo printers are mostly used by professional photographers and
graphic artists and provide larger outputs as a general rule. They are likely to need a
minimum of 11 x 17 inches (tabloid size) or 13 x 19 inches (super-tabloid size).
Professio nals may also need poster size. Professional photo printers usually include
network connections, so you can share the printer in an office or a graphic-arts
department. HP Photosmart 8750 Professional and Epson Stylus Photo R1800 are some
examples of current popular professional photo printers.

A portable photo printer is a good choice for you if you are planning to print on the go. Most portable printers offer a good print quality and are usually light weighted (between 2 to 5 pounds) and conveniently sized. HP PhotoSmart 375 and Canon PIXMA iP90 are some examples of current popular portable photo printers.

The photo printers that use multiple ink cartridges (4 to 8 ink cartridges) provide better quality, sharper and clearer pictures. Most of these printers use 4 colors (cyan, yellow, magenta, and black).

Many photo printers additionally use light cyan and light magenta. And a few printers also use red and green or red and blue in addition to the other 6 colors. The photo printers that use multiple ink cartridges are inexpensive to maintain as you can replace only the color that is empty. There is an added option to use a gray ink cartridge in some of the photo printers. If you opt to get this cartridge, you will have better quality rich blacks, whites and grays. Some photo printers provide long lasting fade -resistant photo prints that keep their colors for many years.

Also consider the paper handling features of the photo printer when buying it. What is the paper capacity? Depending on how often you will print, you can determine how many sheets your printer should hold to suit your needs. Usually personal printers hold 100 to 300 sheets which is quite sufficient. What type of media does the photo printer accept? Can it print on thicker papers for example? Some can also print on envelopes. If you are looking to use different media such as postcards, envelopes, glossy photo papers, transparencies, or iron-on transfer sheets, make sure to get one that accepts these kinds. Most personal photo printers handle letter and legal size paper. Some photo printers also provide double –sided printing. With some photo printers you have the option of printing directly on CD’s.

Some photo printers have two built -in paper trays of different sizes which allow you to print photos without switching paper. On some printers, you can even fill one tray with photo paper and the other with plain stock.

When buying your photo printer, ensure it comes with a warranty and that you carefully review the coverage. Get written explanations of your printer’s warranty explaining its coverage. Get a warranty that covers all the parts (and labor) of your printer’s components. Get information on website services of your printer’s manufacturer. Find out where and in which circumstances you will be allowed the services and how much they will cost you. If you know that you will use the photo printer excessively, we recommend buying an additional warranty from the store where you purchase the printer. Test your printer immediately after buying it.

ALWAYS check the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing you more due to the high costs of their ink cartridges. You should calculate the “cost of ownership” per month.

The math is simple: “number of prints per month” times “cost of the printer cartridge” divided by “the yield of the printer cartridge”. Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular printer cartridge. For example, assume that the average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black printer cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly “cost of ownership” is

(150 pages) x ($28) / 200 pages = $21

Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer’s printer cartridges (OEMs), you may have the se lection of remanufactured printer cartridges, compatible ink/toner cartridges, and refill kits.

Here are some top seller photo printers that I saw in the market recently. The prices below reflect the Amazon.com prices.

Canon PIXMA iP3000 Photo Printer $89.99

Canon PIXMA iP4000 Photo Printer $144.99

Epson Stylus R320 Photo Printer $179.99

Canon PIXMA iP4000 printer is more than a home inkjet printer as it makes color and black & white printing in high speed possible and provide very high resolution. With its two-sided printing function, Canon PIXMA iP4000 reduces your paper costs. Direct printing from cameras is also possible with Canon PIXMA iP4000 printer. It has no memory card slots.

Here are some of the specifications and features of Canon PIXMA IP4000:

* Direct print port & PictBridge compatibility (PictBridge is an important feature that is good to have on a inkjet printer that you print a lot of pictures)
* USB and parallel interfaces; PC and Mac compatible
* Color resolution up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi & black resolution up to 600 x 600 dpi (This is a pretty high resolution for home use)
* Up to 25 ppm black, 17 ppm color; 4-by-6-inch photo in about 36 seconds (of course this is assuming draft mode printing, but even normal printing is pretty fast for a photo printer
* ContrastPLUS 5-color ink system; built-in two-sided printing (again great for a home printer, you probably will not use it a lot but still is good to have)
* Printer ink cartridges: BCI-3eBk, BCI-6Bk, BCI-6C, BCI-6M, BCI-6Y (good cartridge models that you can easily find inexpensive compatibles for, below we will show why this is so important)
* Paper handling (standard): Letter, legal, 4″ x 6″, 5″ x 7″, U.S. #10 envelopes
* Nozzle configuration: Black: 320, Color: 512 x 2 (C, M), 256 x 2 (Y); Total Nozzles: 1856

Here what comes in the regular box: Canon PIXMA iP4000 Printer, Canon PIXMA iP4000 Printhead, BCI-3eBk Black ink cartridge, BCI-6Bk Black ink cartridge, BCI-6C Cyan ink cartridge, BCI-6M Magenta ink cartridge, BCI-6Y Yellow ink cartridge, Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy 4″ x 6″ Sample Pack, power cord, documentation kit, Setup Software & User’s Manual CD-ROM

The street price of this printer ranges between $110 and $164 but this is only a part of the story as we all know. It is the supplies that will make the bulk of the cost of ownership. Since Canon PIXMA IP4000 printer uses cartridges that you can easily find compatible generic cartridges online, the true cost of ownership will be pretty reasonable.

This is how we calculate cost of ownership of a printer: “number of prints per month” times “cost of the printer cartridge” divided by “the yield of the printer cartridge”.

For example, lets assume that you will print 50 photos per month using this printers ink cartridge set that yields about 75 photos and a set of cartridges cost $28 for compatibles and $85 for genuine Canon brand ink cartridges. The monthly “cost of ownership” is then
(50 photos) x ($28) / 75 pages = $19 / month while using compatible cartridges and (50 photos) x ($85) / 75 pages = $57 / month.

Using inkjet printer cleaning cartridges on a regular basis can prolong the life of your inkjet printer’s printhead and provide consistently better print quality.

How do you understand if your print head is clogged? Here are some signs that indicate a clogged print head problem:

If white lines occur when printing,
If faintness or broken lines occur in the nozzle check pattern,
If ink doesn’t come out while you are printing,
If the printer is being used again after a long period of time for the first time,
If you are having to perform a printhead cleaning cycle more often than usual (one or two times),

If your inkjet printer print-head is clogged, then you can follow these steps.

1. Install the cleaning cartridge with the same method of replacing ink cartridge.
2. Execute head cleaning and nozzle check procedures. If print quality is still poor, clean the print head again. This method is not suitable for cleaning deteriorated and damaged print head.

If your ink cartridge nozzles are clogged (not the print-head), then follow these steps instead:

1. Rest the clogged nozzles in warm water and then soak them until the dried ink begins to flow from the nozzle.
2. After a couple minutes, take the nozzles out of the water and dry it with a soft tissue
3. Reinstall the printer ink cartridge and run the print-head cleaning mechanism
4. If this does not work, repeat the process.
5. If your ink cartridge still does not print after repeating, uninstall the cartridge and place it on a soft tissue or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol in an upside down position. Let the ink cartridge sit on it for the night.
6. Reinstall the ink cartridge and run the print-head cleaning mechanism

Your ink cartridge nozzles could also be blocked with dried ink. If your ink cartridge has waited outside for more than a few of days, it is likely that they are clogged.

Christmas time is the time of year when family comes together to enjoy each other’s company, exchange gifts and rejoice in the coming of the New Year that is about to begin. Sometimes, the feeling of Christmas can be invoked with just a few special decorations and finishing touches around the house. Such decorations may include garlands, a Christmas tree or even mistletoe. Oftentimes, however, candles are the way to bring the spirit of the season into your home.

One nice touch to add to your home is Christmas floating candles. These candles can sit in a decorative bowl of water and when lit, they float along the top of the water. It’s a really beautiful affect any time of year, but you can purchase Christmas floating candles specifically for the season. They may be specially scented in fragrances such as pine, Egg Nog or berry. These fragrances add so much to the entire décor of your home. So, why not find a few Christmas floating candles this holiday season to enliven the merriment?

A Christmas tree candle is also nice touch for the holiday season. These candles sit right on the branches of the tree, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere. You may be a bit concerned with the notion of open flame near your Christmas tree, but not to worry. When you purchase a Christmas tree candle these days, they are much more advanced than in generations prior and are designed to be safe for use on the tree. A Christmas tree candle may be just what your tree needs in order to really shine this holiday season.

Have you heard of the newest candle Christmas lights? They really are a must have this Christmas. Whether you are fearful of your tree catching on fire or don’t want to deal with lighting each of the individual candles, the newest candle Christmas lights bring the atmosphere of live candles without the hassle. These lights are much like other string lights, except for their candle shape and appearance. You can even sometimes find lights that flicker as a real candle would! The newest candle Christmas lights are a must have for any household, adding something very special to your Christmas décor.

Candles add that finishing touch to any holiday-inspired décor. Whether it is their unique, seasonal fragrances or soft light, Christmas candles provide the warmth and atmosphere necessary to really enjoy the season.
